Pandal – 24 – Nalin Sarkar Street

We were just out of a Pandal which was modern, radically different at Tala Prattoy. We then reach this Pandal. This is a Pandal which is just built on the street.

The theme is Jalalipi (Water script). The installation is about us polluting rivers. More like a question, Rivers have done so much for humans, what have we done in return.

The whole Pandal is made with large dried vines and black plastic covers intertwined between them. It gives a feeling of plastic intertwined in the vines on the banks of rivers. There are a lot of pots added to add more character.

Then comes the Durga statue. It’s in full black. One of the most beautiful yet ferocious Durga we ever saw. The colors were stunning and the painting of red and yellow colors made it look like a statue that has resided in that place for so many decades. That’s the magic a great artist can create.

Both of us were in awe. We spent quite a while in that Pandal. Pandals are places which suddenly transform and take you to a different realm. Into a different world. Better than a movie. See the pictures for yourself.

Entry to the Pandal. Narrow passage with vines and pots and plastic covers
Just look at the way the pots are arranged. That itself is a skill. See vines and plastic covers above.
Just at the entrance to Durga.
Inside the Pandal. The red color on the top are red cloth strips hanging from the roof with wooden pieces tied at the bottom.
Durga. look at black, red and yellow colors
Such a pretty idol. The colors make it look really weathered and old. See the cracks on the statue also. So realistic.
Look at the detailing. Four faced daemon.
Mahisasur being strangled.
Look the colors of the pillars. It looks like an old temple.
Close up of pillars.
Plastic and vines intertwined.
This is the gully where the pandal was. Walk in, to be transported to a different world.
