There is a road, not visible on google maps, right in the middle of the Rann of Kutch Lake. The road joins Khavda to Dholavira. It’s called the Road to Heaven. It should ideally called Road in Heaven. It is that beautiful.

There is white desert on both sides of the road. The road is still being constructed. One side is almost done and the other side is yet to be done. It’s a 30km long stretch and it’s beautiful.

The lake is still drying up. So we can see patches which has is full water, like a proper lake. There are patches where it has dried completely and it’s white. There are patches where it’s still drying. This is the most beautiful part as you can see layers of brown (road), light blue (water), white (salt) and dark blue (sky) like a sandwich. It’s definitely a place worthy of a visit.

This route is still under construction. So the road state is pretty bad for a good 15km. I guess it will be completed in a year or so. It will become mighty popular then.

Since the lake has not dried up fully a part of the route has water on both sides and there are hundreds of Flamingos right near the road. The Flamingos walk in a single line along the coast with their long beaks scouting the water for food. However they somehow detect human activity on the road (even if you try walking slowly with the bike parked away) and run inside the water immediately. My phone could not capture great close up shots. But for a bird lover this place is heaven.

This route is not shown in Google maps yet. Google feels there is no road here. 🤣 I won’t blame it as the road is still under construction and some parts are difficult to ride on.

The entire stretch is about 30km. But it takes around 1.5hrs to cover, partly because the road is bad and partly because you spend a lot of time taking photos.

Rather than spending time and money at the Rann Ustav, one can take a free ride in the Road to Heaven. It’s much more scenic. Even if you don’t want to go to Dholavira, you can go on the road and return back. It might take a good 4 hours but it’s totally worth it. If you are around the area during sunset, you hit a jackpot. The sunset is just amazing on this road.

I was seeing the photos while writing this post and some photos look like an illusion. It doesn’t feel like it’s a road or water or salt. It’s magic!
