Kings and their wells

Given this is a hot place in summers, rain water harvesting was a thing from centuries ago. If we were to do rainwater harvesting we will make a rectangular yet random shaped asymmetrical pit and make all the water flow into it through bad looking PVC pipes.

The kings were different. Obviously, they were Kings! They not only harvested rain water but also carved the rain water harvesting pit so intricately that it becomes and architectural beauty and eventually an UNESCO world heritage. They did not stop there. They made rooms below the ground near the well so that it stays cool during the summers. And who will stay there? Obviously the queens. Duh!

One such well is the Adalaj Step well. It is so beautiful and intricately carved that I wanted a photo with the well as my backdrop. 🀣

This looks like they have carved it in wood. The intricate craftsmanship is very impressive. That said, I feel it’s carved on a soft stone as most of the carvings have worn out with time.

I heard a person say β€œWe paid 25 rupees to come and see a well.” I pity his ignorance about the importance a man has given to his wife.
